Mackey Opticians North Street moving to 15 Church Lane

Mackey Opticians practice will close its doors at 6 Lower North Street, Belfast tomorrow when it will move around the corner to 15 Church Lane, BT1 4QN

Mackey Opticians, North Street will merge with Stephen Anderson's Opticians - another independent practice that has served North Belfast for three generations similar to the Mackey family.

Our North Street practice opened over 35 years ago as one of the first in Northern Ireland and the UK that allowed shop fronts in opticians practices for the first time, under the name of Eyecare Opticians. With the biggest display of upmarket frames on display at the time before the advent of "designer names", it also offered complete priced spectacles to the public. In 1987, Eyecare Opticians was the first practice to offer disposable contact lenses in Northern Ireland with the launch of Acuvue and has been at the forefront of optics ever since with the first Orthokertaology (Ortho-K) lenses as well as the first Intuitive Colorimeter for dyslexics - this has since been transferred to the Holywood Arches practice in East Belfast. In 2008, it was rebranded under the Mackey Opticians name to improve consistency with the other practices in the family group. 

The area around 6 Lower North Street has become more derelict in recent years and the building has been served with a compulsory purchase order meaning that the practice has had to move  - to make way for planned redevelopment. Fortunately Stephen Anderson had planned to reduce his hours and it has made sense to merge the two practices together at the location on Church Lane which has become a thriving thoroughfare between Victoria Square and the Cathedral Quarter and Merchant Hotel. There is easy parking above as well - with the Hi-Park Multi-storey. 

Both Richard Mackey and Stephen Anderson will continue to practice at Mackey Opticians, Church Lane with late nights available and Saturday appointments. All records, spectacles and contact lenses will be transferred this week to the new location.
